PANEL PROPOSAL
“And time, that takes survey of all the world” (Henry IV, Part I). (Re)timing adaptations
Experiencing any work of art, whether a film or a novel, disturbs the perception of time, and naturally a question arises “which time?”. In art the boundaries of time become blurred, the past becomes the present; fictive time becomes the audience’s real time. The situation gets complicated even further in, for example, theatrical performances, where the difference between “theatrical time/dramatic time” and real time aligns and raises questions concerning these relationships. The issues related to the perception, reception and depiction of time still baffles creators and scholars alike. The panel aims to (re)initiate discussions concerning the interface between adaptation and time/temporality. Following the definition found in the O.E.D. temporality is broadly understood as “3. [t]he quality or condition of being temporal or temporary; temporariness; relation to time.” (https://www.oed.com/dictionary/temporality_n?tab=meaning_and_use#18882806 ). In the practice of cultural adaptation time is of essence as the temporal context of both the adapted and adapting works is, needless to say, crucial, especially if the works are separated by a significant temporal gap. The panel focuses on how time and temporality are treated in adaptations, how they affect the source and target texts, how they are used to comment on the here and now, how the different temporalities of the adapting media interact with the source text, etc. We would like to welcome papers on the inter- and intra-medial adaptations, case studies and more theoretically oriented studies which discuss time and temporality in adaptations.
We invite scholarly contributions that centre on various aspects of time, temporality and adaptations and we do not want to limit contributors in our discussions. Potential topics may focus around, but are by no means limited to the follow topics:
- Theoretical concept of time in adaptations
- Timelessness of/and adaptations
- Case studies of time and temporality in adaptations
- The concept of time and its role in film and theatre adaptations (dramatic time)
- Liminality of time in adaptations
- The language of and about time in adaptations
- History and time in adaptations
- The relation of time and space on stage and in film
- Perceptual and conceptual time in adaptations
- Time-keeping on stage and in film
- Postcolonial temporalities
- Ricouerian relationship of time and narrative
