The topic of my dissertation is: Subcarpathian Genius Loci: The Territory of Contemporary Artistic Sensibility
The central artistic-research problem of the project concerns the manner in which the experience of the geographical and cultural peripherality of the Subcarpathian region (Podkarpacie), a historical Galician palimpsest, is transposed into the idiom of oil painting, in particular through the mechanisms of multisensory perception. This problem bears directly on my own artistic practice. My painting emerges at the intersection of three phenomena that have not yet been described jointly in Polish art history: the experience of synaesthesia, advanced vocal and echolocation training, and a heightened sensitivity to the architectural acoustics of space. The research problem also encompasses the question of the relationship between individual practice and the broader phenomenon of contemporary Subcarpathian art. Reconstructing this phenomenon requires confronting my own creative perspective with the experiences of other artists from the region, by means of in-depth interviews that reveal shared or divergent mechanisms through which peripherality is internalised in the language of visual art.
