The topic of my dissertation is: „Students’ Level of Interpersonal Trust and Their Tendency to Replace the Helping Relationship with Contact with Artificial Intelligence”
More and more young people turn to artificial intelligence not only for information but also for advice, comfort and emotional support. This is especially true of university students. Tools such as chatbots are available at any time, never judge and require no effort to build a relationship. For some users they are becoming an alternative to talking with a friend, a family member, a teacher or a professional helper. Research so far has developed along two separate lines. The first concerns trust in AI systems, understood as an attitude towards technology. The second concerns the possibility of AI replacing human relationships, without systematically taking interpersonal trust into account. No study has yet combined a validated measure of general interpersonal trust with the tendency to replace the helping relationship with contact with AI. The problem has also not yet been studied among students in the Polish academic environment.
This phenomenon is the focus of my scientific interest. My interests include social pedagogy, helping relationships, social support, interpersonal trust, attachment styles and the place of new technologies in young people’s lives. During my doctoral studies I will conduct quantitative, correlational research using a diagnostic survey among about 350–450 students. The research will cover students’ level of interpersonal trust, their attachment style, the type of support they seek (informational, instrumental, emotional, spiritual and material), their trust in AI, and the extent to which they use artificial intelligence as a source of support.
As the theoretical and cognitive objective of the research, I consider explaining the replacement of human help by contact with AI through the mechanism of interpersonal trust, which brings both existing lines of research together. The practical objective is to formulate conclusions and recommendations for pedagogical practice and for higher education institutions, which will help design more effective forms of support for students.
The results of the research will broaden pedagogical knowledge of helping relationships, interpersonal trust and the ways in which young adults use artificial intelligence. They will also provide a basis for further analyses in social pedagogy and care-and-educational pedagogy. In practical terms, they may be useful to the academic community and to those responsible for organising student support. They will show how to adapt forms of help to the changing ways in which students look for it, and how to support the conscious and responsible use of AI in education and in helping relationships.
