In my doctoral dissertation I am focusing on the problem of time. The title of my work is Childhood - a source of contexts for experiencing time in a work of art. I am trying to investigate if it is possible to capture time in image. Mainly I am concentrating on childhood period. Themes of time and childhood are very frequent in art but I want to depart from their typical representations. My own memories, remembered landscapes, events, symbols I am including in the composition of the image. I want the image to be a synthesis of all these elements. However, I am not interested in recreating the past, but in treating the image as an expression of „internal memory”, encompassing all thoughts and impressions. I am extending my artistic statement to include reflection on the presence of melancholy in art understood as the impossibility of returning.
I am realizing my theme in graphic techniques such as alintaglio, drypoint and mezzotint. The graphic series will include a dozen works. Each of them will be composed of two or three matrices. Individual matrices appear in subsequent works as afterimages. For this purpose, I am using a transparent medium that I add to black paint. Each stamp appears two or three times, fading in each subsequent image. A work made of several overlapping images is an attempt to show the specificity of time, coexistence the past, present and future.
