Culture and Cognition in Language 4

On April 28-29, 2025, the Institute of English Studies organized an international linguistic conference titled "CULTURE AND COGNITION IN LANGUAGE 4: Current Approaches to Discourse Analysis."

The conference was attended by 52 participants representing 26 universities from 11 countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Austria, Croatia, Greece, Malaysia, and Poland. World-renowned cognitive linguists, including Prof. Raymond Gibbs, Prof. Christopher Hart, Prof. Jeannette Littlemore, and Prof. Andreas Musolff, were invited to the conference. They delivered lectures on topics such as metaphorization, the role of gestures in the speeches of right-wing populist politicians, and narratives in conspiracy theories.

The participants' presentations, nearly half of whom came from abroad, addressed discursive representations of key contemporary global issues, such as healthcare, migration, and environmental protection. In addition to the rich academic program, participants had the opportunity to explore the region’s top attractions, including a yacht cruise on Lake Solina and a gondola ride to the summit of Mount Jawor. The conference concluded with a bonfire combined with a tasting of local culinary specialties.
The conference was co-funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange under the Welcome to Poland Programme (2022).
