Jews in the Musical Culture of Galicia
The publication focuses on the activities of the Jewish community in co‑creating and developing the musical culture of Galicia, which left a clearly visible mark on the historical landscape of this part of the Polish lands. Its character is multifaceted and encompasses a wide spectrum of artistic life, often interacting with scholarly, pedagogical and institutional activity. Owing to its richness and complexity, documenting the contribution of Jews to the musical culture of Galicia is a fascinating task that brings to light many previously unknown facts, biographies, artistic careers, and determinants of Jewish identity in its various manifestations—reaching far beyond the temporal and territorial boundaries of Galicia.
Volume 2 received a distinction in the 4th International Competition Musical Eagles (Muzyczne Orły) in the field of musical arts, in the category scientific and popular‑science publication. The monograph is a collection of articles documenting the contribution of Jewish artists to Polish musical culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. The authors draw on previously unpublished memoirs and unique correspondence of Polish Jewish musicians, uncovering new biographical threads of well‑known figures as well as the profiles of lesser‑known Jewish musicians. The publication also includes themes related to music criticism, reflections on Jewish music, and contributions to the history of Jewish musical organizations. All these topics preserve the memory of the life of the Galician Jewish community and the achievements of its distinguished musicians and musicologists, whose artistic legacy extends far beyond the local community.
