Agreement Between the University of Rzeszów and Nowa Sarzyna. The Pontic Azalea in the Spotlight
The University of Rzeszów has entered into a cooperation agreement with the City and Municipality of Nowa Sarzyna. The document was officially signed by the Rector of the University, Professor Adam Reich, and the Mayor of Nowa Sarzyna, Andrzej Rychel.
The partnership will focus on joint initiatives, including educational and promotional projects aimed at the protection of biodiversity—particularly in the Kołacznia Nature Reserve, home to the Pontic azalea (Rhododendron luteum), also known as the yellow azalea.
The natural habitat of this rare shrub species is located precisely within the Kołacznia Reserve in Nowa Sarzyna. As one of the few such sites in Poland, it is of exceptional ecological value and regional significance. The agreement outlines actions not only for the protection of this plant but also for the promotion of knowledge about it through educational programs, landscape design projects, as well as scientific and public outreach initiatives.
Planned activities include the construction of a greenhouse, the organization of educational workshops, involvement of students in the design of azalea-themed gardens, and joint informational campaigns. Further details of the collaboration will be determined progressively.
