Professor Jan Stankiewicz, PhD, DSc (1939–2025)

It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the passing of Professor Jan Stankiewicz, PhD, DSc, who departed this life on 28 September 2025.

Prof. Jan Stankiewicz, PhD, DSc worked at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Rzeszów (formerly the Higher School of Pedagogy) from 1988 to 2006. Between 1997 and 2006, he served as the Head of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and the Department of Complex Analysis.

As a mathematician, he conducted research in the field of complex analysis. He was a scholar who founded the Rzeszów school of geometric theory of complex functions, bringing together academic staff from Rzeszów University of Technology and the University of Rzeszów. He had a significant  impact on the academic development of the faculty members at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Rzeszów. He supervised 13 doctoral dissertations, six of which are or were  directly connected to our University. He was also a highly respected teacher and mentor to many generations of students.

Professor Jan Stankiewicz combined his scientific work with social engagement. He served for many years as the President of the Rzeszów Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society. He was a member of the Main Board of the Polish Mathematical Society, and also a member of the American Mathematical Society. In 2016, he was honored with the title “Meritorious for the City of Rzeszów” in recognition of his contributions to the local community.

Professor Jan Stankiewicz will be remembered by his students and colleagues as a kind-hearted person, always open to the concerns of others. He remains a role model as both a scholar and a teacher, inspiring others through his dedication, integrity, and passion for knowledge.

The funeral Holy Mass will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel at Wilkowyja Cemetery in Rzeszów.
