About the Institute

Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism is an independent research and didactic unit within Faculty of Philology of University of Rzeszów. It consists of 9 well-equipped departments conducting research in literary studies and linguistics, and employs 4 full professors, 26 associate professors, 12 PhD holders and 1 master’s degree holder. Candidates can choose between 3 study programs: Polish Philology, Journalism and Social Communication (both available in BA and MA programs), and Applied Polish Studies (available in a BA program). The graduates may choose to enroll in PhD courses in linguistics and literary studies in the Doctoral School of University of Rzeszów. The institute also conducts postgraduate courses in speech therapy, neurologopedics, Polish language teaching and carries out Polish language certificate exams for adults (levels A1-C2) and children (levels A1-B1).

The history of Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism reaches back to 1965, when Rzeszów’s Teacher Training College was founded. A year after that, Chair of Literature and Polish Language emerged, and in 1981 it was transformed into Institute of Polish Philology, which later joined Faculty of Philology of University of Rzeszów. The faculty functioned up to September 30, 2019, had the ability to confer PhD and Doctor habilitatus titles in literary studies and linguistics, and received grade A in the latest scientific evaluation. In recent years, there has been a significant expansion of the educational offer for students, as a result of which the former Institute of Polish Philology was transformed into Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism as of June 1, 2018.

Currently, the institute consists of 9 departments:

  • Department of Literature and Culture of the 19th Century and Mythological Studies
  • Department of Polish Literature of the 20th and 21st Centuries
  • Department of Polish Literature and Polish Language Teaching Methodology
  • Department of Theory and Anthropology of Literature
  • Department of Media and Culture Studies
  • Department of Cultural Linguistics and Social Communication
  • Department of Pragmatic Communication
  • Department of Onomastic Studies

Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism actively partners with domestic and foreign universities by sending out employees for traineeships and accepting foreign Polonists, Slavists and media experts. Students benefit from MOST and ERASMUS+ exchange programs, develop their interests in scientific clubs, publish their works and take part in scientific conferences. Thanks to the institute’s cooperation with several nation-wide institutions and media platforms graduates have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and also to take up employment there.

In the recent years Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism have been dynamically developing thanks to employees’ academic promotions, research contacts with centers in Poland, Europe, Brazil, USA and Canada, highly rated research and publications, and students’ cultural, artistic and scientific activity.

The institute’s office is located in the A1 building at the Rejtana campus, close to the university’s library, Polish Television’s office, the picturesque Wisłok river and the historical city center.
