Institute of German Studies

About the Institute

Institute of German Studies is a teaching and research unit within Faculty of Philology of University of Rzeszów located in the Faculty of Philology building at al. mjr. W Kopisto 2B in Rzeszów. It operates in its current structure since January 1, 2025, but its beginnings can be traced back to 1975 and are connected to Rzeszów’s Teacher Training College (WSP), where Department of German Philology was founded (and later transformed to Chair of German Philology in the late 1980s). At the beginning of the 21st century, the unit operated as an independent Institute of German Philology within University of Rzeszów’s/WSP’s Faculty of Philology. However, due to restructuring, it was transformed into Chair of German Philology and functioned within Institute of Neophilology of the College of Humanities from 2019 to 2024.

University of Rzeszów’s Institute of German Studies offers a 3-year German philology BA program and a 2-year MA program for BA graduates. Students may choose between three specializations: teaching, translation, and German in business. Two student scientific clubs operate within the Institute: Student Scientific Circle of Germanists and Kulturklang.

The research conducted at Institute of German Studies is focused mainly on two disciplines from the humanities, i.e. linguistics and literary studies. The research is closely related to the education program and the learning outcomes defined for the German philology program of study.

Currently, Institute of German Studies constitutes of two departments and three workshops:

  • Department of German Linguistics and Translation Studies
  • Department of Specialist Communication and General Linguistics
  • Theoretical and Contrastive Linguistics Workshop
  • Glottodidactics and Intercultural Communication Workshop
  • Literature and Culture of German-speaking Countries Workshop

The employees of abovementioned units conduct didactic and research activities. The Institute also employs a native speaker – a DAAD lecturer (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service).
