Centre for Computer Modelling, AI and Data Science
The Centre for Computer Modelling, AI and Data Science was established as part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Rzeszów, pursuant to Resolution No. 229/11/2013 of the University Senate. The Centre was constructed and equipped using funding from the Regional Operational Programme of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship for 2007–2013. As of 1 January 2025, following the introduction of a new organizational structure at the University of Rzeszów, the Centre became part of the Faculty of Exact and Technical Sciences.
From April 2014, the Centre was headed by Associate Professor Jan G. Bazan. Following a structural reorganization on October 1, 2019, Professor Bazan assumed the role of Head of the Institute of Computer Science, while Dr Lech Zaręba was appointed as the new Head of the Centre for Computer Modelling, AI and Data Science.
The Centre currently employs 17 researchers specializing in technical aspects of computer science and computer engineering, including 2 associate professors (habilitated doctors), 11 PhD holders, and 3 master's degree holders.
Infrastructure and Computational Resources
The Centre is equipped with 120 modern PC workstations and a high-performance computing cluster named PEGAZ, offering approximately 7.5 TeraFLOPS of computational power. The cluster comprises:
- 88 Intel Xeon E5-2620 processors (6 cores each, 2.0 GHz clock speed, 15 MB cache)
- Over 1 TB of RAM (1032 GB, 258 × 4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz)
- Approximately 18 TB of disk storage
This installation is currently the most powerful computing facility in the Subcarpathian region, enabling complex, massively parallel computations across 480 concurrent threads. It supports advanced research projects requiring high-performance computing capabilities.
In addition to the computing cluster, the Centre’s teaching and research infrastructure includes:
- Process control kits based on advanced microprocessor technologies
- Iris recognition systems
- Fingerprint image identification kits
- Face tracking and recognition systems in video streams
- Automated human figure tracking systems in video streams
Mission and Activities
The mission of the Centre for Computer Modelling, AI and Data Science encompasses the following objectives:
- Initiating and conducting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and other scientific domains
- Supporting the acquisition and implementation of research grants
- Providing access to computing resources through the awarding of computing grants, enabling researchers to utilize the Centre’s infrastructure
- Enhancing the quality of education at the University of Rzeszów by integrating the Centre’s equipment into teaching activities
