HISTORY OF THE FACULTY
History of the faculty goes back to the year 1965, when Teacher Training College was appointed by the resolution of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (in 2001 it was merged with other branches into University of Rzeszów). Faculty of Philology and History and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics were the two composing the University at its beginnings. On the first of October, 1965, an independent Faculty of Philology emerged and was composed of two chairs: Chair of Polish Philology and Chair of Russian Philology.
The year 1976 brought changes to the structure of the young university, with the following entities joining in: Chair of Literature and Polish Language, Chair of Literature and Russian Language, Department of German Philology (appointed in 1975), Chair of Pedagogy, and Department of History. The unit was also renamed to Faculty of Humanities. The development of the chairs and their rising scientific potential caused the two biggest to be transformed into Institute of Polish Philology and Institute of Russian Philology.
Faculty of Humanities endured for 10 years, until 1986, when Rzeszów’s WSP underwent another structural change. Faculty of Philology was restored and comprised of 3 units: Institute of Polish Philology, Institute of Russian Philology, and Chair of German Philology, to which in 1995 joined Chair of English Philology. Later the two chairs were transformed into institutes.
In 2001 Faculty of Philology joined the newly founded University of Rzeszów. At the time it was comprised of four prospering institutes and additionally, in 2017, Chair of Applied Linguistics was singled out.
Between the years 2019 and 2024 the units belonging to the faculty operated within University of Rzeszów’s College of Humanities with two disciplinary institutes established: Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism and Institute of Modern Languages (comprised of Chair of English Philology, Chair of German Philology, Chair of Russian Philology, and Chair of Applied Linguistics).
On the 1st of January 2025 University of Rzeszów returned to its original facultative structure. The newly reactivated Faculty of Philology is currently made up of five institutes: Institute of English Studies, Institute of German Studies, Institute of Applied Linguistics, Institute of Polish Studies and Journalism, and Institute of Slavonic Studies (former Russian Studies). Following entities also belong to the Faculty: Polish Community Centre POLONUS, Centre for Foreign Language Studies, and Research and Educational Centre TEKST – DYSKURS – KOMUNIKACJA.
