About LDASR
In 2015, on the initiative of the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Rzeszów and the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre Foundation, the University Repository of Archaeological Materials (URAM) was established. It was the first facility of its kind in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Its creation was a response to the need to establish appropriate conditions for the collection and protection of archaeological artefacts. The huge increase in archaeological materials was primarily a consequence of many years of large-scale research preceding the construction of the A-4 motorway. This research yielded extremely interesting and valuable discoveries, changing in many ways the existing knowledge about the history of south-eastern Poland. However, this also brought back the problem of storing historical materials, which has been known for years in archaeological circles, as well as the limited capacity of museums and scientific institutions in this regard. The building designated for this purpose was handed over to the Institute of Archaeology by the University of Rzeszów, and its renovation and adaptation to its new function was financed by the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre Foundation and the University of Rzeszów. A large part of the artefacts obtained during pre-investment research, as well as during other archaeological works carried out in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship has been deposited at the URAM.
During its development, the facility gained new functions, and the URAM was transformed into the Laboratory of Digital Archaeology and Source Research (LDASR). Currently, the facility houses: archaeological laboratories of the Department of Prehistoric Archaeology and the Department of Medieval and Modern Archaeology, an anthropological laboratory, a photographic laboratory, and a digital documentation laboratory equipped with a 3D scanner. The storage and archival space allow for the storage of archaeological artefacts and documentation from research expeditions conducted by employees of the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Rzeszów and the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre Foundation, as well as for the acceptance of materials from accidental discoveries and research conducted in the area under the jurisdiction of the Rzeszów branch of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments. The Laboratory of Digital Archaeology and Source Research is also a place where classes for archaeology students of the Institute of Archaeology UR are held, as well as events for children and young people aimed at promoting archaeology and knowledge about the protection of monuments.
The objectives and tasks carried out by our institution are as follows:
- storage and protection of artefacts
- acceptance of artefacts and documentation from archaeological research and accidental discoveries for deposit
- making the LDASR collections available for scientific purposes
- lending the LDASR collections for exhibition purposes
- documentation and source analysis of archaeological artefacts
- digitization of archaeological artefacts
- teaching activities for archaeology students
- educational activities and promotion of knowledge about archaeology and protection of monuments
