Research
The research undertaken by the academic staff of the Institute spans a wide range of archaeological and historical fields, with particular emphasis placed on the eastern frontiers of the Central European cultural sphere in prehistory and the Early Middle Ages.
The Department of Prehistoric Archaeology focuses on processes of cultural transformation and the emergence of distinct cultural traditions and communities. These studies are carried out in close cooperation with international partners, especially research institutions in Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and France.
The Department of Medieval and Modern Archaeology concentrates primarily on the Polish–Ruthenian borderlands, with special attention devoted to the historical region of the Cherven Cities and to the broader processes shaping East-Central and Eastern Europe.
The Institute actively participates in numerous international research projects and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. This integrated and holistic approach enables comprehensive investigation of complex historical and archaeological phenomena.
