About the Institute

The origins of the Institute date back to 1973, when the Higher Pedagogical School in Rzeszów launched a part-time History course. On October 1, 1974, the independent Department of History was established. Seven years later, it was transformed into the Department of History. In 1982, the Institute of History was formally established. By the end of the 1990s, the Institute comprised twelve independent research units.

In 1993, the Institute was granted the authority to award doctoral degrees. In 1999, the Faculty of Sociology and History obtained the right to confer postdoctoral degrees in History. Since the 2019/2020 academic year, the Institute of History has been part of the College of Humanities at the University of Rzeszów.

The Institute offers three undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) programmes: History, Cultural Studies, and Culture and Heritage Tourism. It maintains active cooperation with several external partners, including the local branch of the Polish Historical Society and the Historical Association.
