About the Institute

Established in 1999, the Institute of Archaeology was founded to serve as a dynamic academic hub for research focused on the East-Central European borderlands. From its inception, the Institute has been dedicated to nurturing the intellectual growth of emerging scholars and researchers.

In 2005, the Institute earned the right to confer doctoral degrees, marking a significant milestone in its academic development. Building on the success of its faculty’s involvement in both national and international research initiatives, the Institute was further authorized in 2010 to award postdoctoral degrees (dr hab.) in Archaeology.

The Institute is organized into two specialized departments:

  • Department of Prehistoric Archaeology
  • Department of Early Medieval Archaeology

Today, the Institute continues to lead interdisciplinary and international research projects, collaborating with numerous European research centres. Its fieldwork extends beyond Poland to include excavations in Ukraine, Moldavia, Germany, France, Romania, and the Czech Republic.
