University of Rzeszów Academic Choir

The University of Rzeszów Academic Choir was established in 2014. It brings together students from various faculties and disciplines of the university. The founder and conductor of the ensemble is Katarzyna Sobas. Initially formed as a female choir, it transitioned into a mixed choir in 2019.

Activities

Since its inception, the choir has been actively performing, presenting a repertoire that includes a cappella works from various historical periods and musical styles, both sacred and secular. Vocal-instrumental concerts also play a significant role in its artistic activity. Notable performances include:

  • A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten
  • The Latin Jazz Mass by Martin Völlinger
  • Stabat Mater and Dixit Dominus by Johann Mederitsch (Polish premiere)
  • Skarby nie chodzą piechotą – a musical narrative about Ignacy Łukasiewicz by Krzysztof Mroziak (world premiere)

The choir also participates in international projects. In 2023–2024, it took part in the "Visegrad Choral Bridges III" project, which resulted in a recording of works inspired by the folk traditions of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. The recordings were made in collaboration with the following university choirs:

  • Univerzitný miešaný spevácky zbor Mladosť, Matej Bel University (Banská Bystrica, Slovakia)
  • Smíšený komorní sbor Ateneo, Palacký University (Olomouc, Czech Republic)

Achievements

  • 2019 – Gold Diploma and 2nd Prize at the "Žilina Voce Magna" competition (Slovakia)
  • 2023 – Gold Diploma at the 10th International Festival of Christmas Carols and Pastorals in Rzeszów
  • 2025 – Grand Prix and Special Award for the Best Performance of a Work by a Polish Composer at the "O Złotą Wstęgę Solczy" Festival in Eišiškės (Lithuania)
