Among the diverse research directions pursued by the academic staff, particular emphasis is placed on exploring the eastern boundaries of the Central European cultural province during prehistory and the early Middle Ages.
The Department of Prehistoric Archaeology concentrates on the processes of cultural transformation and the emergence of distinct cultural circles. This research is conducted in close collaboration with international partners, especially institutions in Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and France.
The Department of Early Medieval Archaeology focuses on the Polish-Ruthenian borderlands, with special attention to the historical location of the Cherven Cities and the broader formation of East-Central and Eastern Europe.
The Institute is actively engaged in numerous international research projects and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. This integrative and holistic approach enhances the depth and scope of investigations into complex historical and archaeological questions.
