Studies

Sociology

The beginnings of sociology in Rzeszów date back to 1968, when the Department of Social and Historical Sciences was established at the College of Pedagogy (now University of Rzeszów). In 1982 the Department of Philosophy and Sociology was established, and the social sciences were also started. In 1996, the Institute of Sociology was separated from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, which currently has six plants. The first recruitment in the field of sociology took place in the academic year 1992/1993. Studies in the field of sociology are addressed to people with humanistic and social interests, observing social reality, possessing or desiring to develop in themselves the ability to critically analyze and classify the behavior of people and communities. Students can develop and improve their interests and skills in the framework of two specializations: "regional-local government" and "market and public opinion research" or in the field of social work at the Institute of Sociology since the year of 2011/2012. They also have the opportunity to participate in international student exchange at European and non-European universities cooperating with the University of Rzeszów. Learning outcomes envisaged for sociological studies allow graduates to adapt to the changing labor market, its local specifics and expectations of employers. A varied program of studies, the use of proven and innovative teaching methods by the academic staff with the use of modern premises and technical infrastructure as well as professional software guarantees students acquiring wide knowledge, both in theoretical and practical dimensions. Completing studies in the field of sociology gives a wide range of professional self-realization. Graduates, depending on the chosen specialization, can work in various types of local government organizations, research companies, organizations requiring their creativity from their members (eg in the advertising industry), using knowledge in the field of psychology and social communication (including the laws governing communication mass and social engineering), which is the basis of activity in the Public Relations (PR) or Human Relations (HR) sector. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of sociological studies, graduates can find employment also in consulting and consulting companies.

Social Work

From the academic year 2011/2012, as part of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Rzeszów, there is a social work course, in which education takes place at first and second cycle studies in a full-time and part-time mode. In the direction of social work, students are prepared to responsibly perform the profession of a social worker, which is done, among others, thanks to cooperation with various institutions. These include social welfare homes, veteran's homes, community self-help houses, occupational therapy workshops, homeless shelters for women and men, associations and foundations, labor offices, regional agencies for regional development, educational and upbringing centers, socio-therapeutic day care centers, specialized counseling and courts and police. Candidates who have the opportunity to supply the ranks of professional social workers after the end of education, should demonstrate, among others, such features as: the ability to make contacts, the ability to work effectively under time pressure, resistance to stress, empathy, consistency in action, optimism, impartiality, disinterestedness. An important element of education in the field of social work is conducting scientific research and their effective use in the practice of social work (social research in the field of poverty and social exclusion, occupational burnout, dysfunctionality of the family and social pathologies, etc.).   The wide knowledge of graduates of first degree studies in the field of social work predisposes them to take up work in: in social assistance institutions at all levels; in nursing homes and adaptation centers; in nursing homes of all types; in hospitals, schools, courts, resocialization facilities, police, penitentiary institutions; in non-governmental organizations and in state administration (mainly local government); in private assistance and education.
