About us

A brief history of the Department:

The Department of Computer Science was brought to life by the decision of the Rector of the University of Rzeszów on 9th June 2006 as an independent research and didactic unit of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Rzeszów.  From 2011 to 2013 the Department functioned as the Institute of Computer Science. Since 2013,  as a result of the total transformation of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Institute again has been transformed into the Department of Computer Science as an independent research unit of the Faculty.  The Department provides work not only for its own academic staff but also for people outside the Department. The computing education and research work in the field of computer studies started at the end of the 1970s along with the establishing of Computation Laboratory in 1978 within the frames of the Department of Mathematics (since 1981 Institute of Mathematics ) at the Pedagogical University in Rzeszów. Concurrent computing was commenced by our research teams in 1986 with the establishment of the Department of Computer Science within the organizational structure of the Institute of Mathematics. Computer Science was then a complementary subject for students of a number of other study courses. The first person who organized and managed Computation Laboratory was Tadeusz Rumak, DSc, PhD, whereas Zbigniew Suraj, PhD was the originator and manager of the Department of Computer Science for many years (since 1986 to 2005), and since 2006 up to 2012 prof. Zbigniew Suraj has been responsible for organizing and running computer study courses in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Rzeszów. From 2012 to 2014 the head of the Institute of Computer Science was Jan Bazan, associate professor. Since 2014 prof. Z. Suraj manages again the Department of Computer Science.

The Department has its seat in the Center for Innovation and Transfer of Natural Sciences and Engineering Knowledge at the University of Rzeszów, 1 Prof. S. Pigonia Street in Rzeszów.

Laboratories:

The Department possess the Research-Scientific Laboratory of Modelling and Process Mining (leader: prof. Zbigniew Suraj), functioning into the structure of the Center for Innovation and Transfer of Natural Sciences and Engineering Knowledge.  This laboratory allows to conduct the research according to individual and group interests of staff working for the Department of Computer Science using modern and unique hardware and software. The laboratory equipments include:
  • personal computers,
  • specialized software,
  • auxiliary hardware.
This equipment is available for the Department staff and the computer science students cooperated with the Department. Additionally, the didactics related to the computer science studies is supported  by four well equipped in hardware and software computer laboratories and the laboratory of Local Academy of CISCO.
