Title of societal impact description

COVID-19 Project in the framework of national and international cooperation of medical workers

1. The contribution of scientific activities

The problem of COVID-19 appeared at the beginning of 2020 and is continued until now due to the development of a pandemic in our country and around the world. Thanks to the cooperation undertaken as part of the COVID-19 project for medical workers, in cooperation with Polish and foreign scientific associations, it was possible to create recommendations for the staff dealing with this virus. Through the recommendations issued by the Polish Society of Anaesthesiological and Intensive Care Nurses, it was possible to start cooperation with the Ministry of Health by contacting the National Consultant of Anesthesiological and Intensive Care Nursing.

2. Evidence of the contribution of scientific activities

1. Safe care of patients with COVID-19

2. Instructions for putting on and taking off protective clothing

3. Checklist for wards receiving patients with COVID-19

4. Manipulation of the respiratory tract in a patient with suspected coronavirus infection

5. Prone Position and mechanical ventilation

6. Management of the patient's body after death due to COVID-19

The initiator and originator of the project is Dr. Sabina Krupa, assistant in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Institute of Health Sciences, University of Rzeszów. As the Coordinator of the Working Group for the practice of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiological and Intensive Care Nurses (PTPAiIO), Chairwoman of Social Media World Federation of Crtical Care Nursing (WFCCN).

The team members:

  • Dr n. o zdr. Dorota Ozga,
  • Dr n. o zdr. Dawid Filip,
  • Dr  n. o zdr. Edyta Niemczyk,
  • Mgr Krystyna Woźniak

Thanks to the cooperation undertaken as part of the project, it was possible to create recommendations that are currently used throughout Poland in units fighting COVID-19 and are approved and recommended by the Ministry of Health and the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate of the Republic of Poland. In addition to national guidelines, it was possible to create Emergency Adaptation to work in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for employees not working in the ICU. By organizing a Webinar on April 25, 2020, remote contact and exchange of experiences from a pandemic that is taking place in our country is possible.

3. Characteristics of societal impact

Within the framework of the project, there is a need to develop and verify existing intra-department procedures for patient management with COVID-19, taking into account the specificity, organization and infrastructure of the ward and available resources; designation of individual zones (patient stay, buffer, airlock, etc.), communication routes, methods of movement, transfer of clean materials and waste removal, procedures after contact with the patient with COVID-19; developing a way of communicating the team directly caring for the patient with supporting persons outside the zone.
In addition, it is necessary to familiarize staff with the adopted procedures, conduct training in this area and trainings on the use of necessary personal protective equipment - in relation to all medical and support staff, including cleaning personnel. If possible, it is necessary to limit the number of personnel in direct contact with the patient to a safe minimum.
An important issue is related to the appointment of teams for direct patient care (doctor - nurse), supported by a designated person in the buffer zone (maintaining contact, forwarding material for testing, supplementing the necessary equipment, etc.). Remember to organize and plan patient care in a rational way, ensuring full care, while minimizing the time of direct contact between the staff and the patient.

4. Evidence of societal impact
All evidence of social impact can be found in links and attachments, which include the Webinarium poster titled ‘Fight against COVID-19’ - a nursing point of view. We would like to mention that not only nurses but also the psychologist PTPAiIO and the Medical Rescuer who took part in many international missions take part in this meeting, e.g. in a rescue mission in Lombardy. Thanks to the invited guests, it will be possible to share current knowledge on how we can fight the virus and what tasks have been undertaken in other countries that have the same purpose as we do.

5. Justification for the interdisciplinary nature of scientific activity of crucial importance for the development of science

The cooperation undertaken as part of the project has been expanded worldwide. Specialists have been invited to cooperate, among others from Croatia - WFCCN President Adriano Friganovic, board member of WFCCN - Sandro Vidamić. In addition, cooperation with the Ministry of Health, National Consultant in the field of Anaesthesiological Nursing and Intensive Care will allow to reach all departments where we are struggling with COVID-19 in a more accessible way. The President of PTPAiIO Paweł Witt, PhD, actively monitors the project.
